the hatch has announced that THE JUSTICE 2025, their highly anticipated music event, will take place on May 17 (Saturday) at the Nishizawa Suisan Building in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The event will feature approximately 60 artists, including notable acts from both local and national scenes. A statement from the band’s Ao Yamada (vocals, trombone, keyboards) has also been shared.
the hatch, an alternative dance band from Sapporo, has been gaining significant attention since expanding to a five-member lineup in 2024 with the addition of Soichiro Anzai (percussion, synthesizer). They’ve recently completed a successful eight-stop Western Japan tour and solo shows in Osaka and Nagoya. The band has also released “Tohmei,” a track from their upcoming third album, which is available for streaming.
THE JUSTICE 2025 is part of the hatch’s independent project, which they began in February 2020 in their hometown of Sapporo. The event will be hosted at the Nishizawa Suisan Building, a unique venue housing various spaces such as ZIPPY HALL, 161 Warehouse, rehearsal studios, and record bars. Among the 60 artists set to perform are Texas 3000, mmm, Tenniscoats, and Boku a.k.a NGS. Sapporo-based acts such as Discharming Man, Television Tairiku Ondo, Glans, and Otome Kaiga will also be featured.
The event’s primary goal is to create opportunities for local Sapporo musicians, connecting them with their future careers. This year marks the fourth edition of THE JUSTICE, but due to financial difficulties, the event is offering new ticket options. In addition to the standard 4,000 yen tickets, a special ticket priced above 5,000 yen will allow attendees to choose their price and gain access to exclusive archive content. High school students and younger will be able to attend for free, and a donation plan with U-23 tickets and archive perks is also available.
A statement from Ao Yamada of the hatch has also been shared, providing more insight into the event and its purpose.
Everyone that comes to this event is an opportunity for all who visit to experience the diversity and potential of self-expression from the same perspective. It’s a day where everyone can reflect, think, and take home a small spark that was born during the event. I hope that these unspoken moments and actions will continue to thrive in the future, far beyond the present. I’ve begun to think that becoming one of those small cogs would be my way of giving back to all the various forms of expression that have deeply moved me.
Last year, despite the event’s rich content, the financial burden became too large, leading to a significant deficit. This year marks our fourth edition, and we find ourselves in a similar situation. In addition to the ticket sales, we will need at least 200,000 yen, and ideally, 500,000 yen, to make it happen.
I have reconsidered the ticket prices several times, but the more I reflect on the true intentions behind THE JUSTICE, the more I want to hold this event at a price accessible to young people and those struggling financially. However, with the limited capacity of the Nishizawa Building, there is a cap on how much can be covered by ticket sales alone, making it difficult to solve the situation through attendance alone.
That’s why this time, we’ve introduced a donation plan where you can contribute starting from 1,000 yen, as well as a plan where ticket buyers can choose their ticket price. There is no minimum ticket price restriction. I cannot think of anything more valuable to offer than the event itself, but as a small token of appreciation, I plan to share photos and videos from the event as an archive.
Anyone who is able, even if just a little, your help is greatly appreciated. We are trying to gather just a little more money to balance things out.
There are still many shortcomings and contradictions that I carry, but the reason I want to continue is clear. Despite inviting over 50 artists each year, the fact that so many talented musicians are emerging from this land—so many that I struggle with the lineup—is the very reason why this event must continue.
To everyone who supports this small musical tribute,
Please lend us your strength.
the hatch, Midori Yamada
