Bandai Namco Filmworks and California-based Legendary Entertainment have signed a joint investment agreement for the Hollywood live-action film adaptation of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, titled GUNDAM (working title), in January 2025.
The Mobile Suit Gundam series, which began airing in 1979, has produced 25 TV animation series, 34 theatrical/released films, and 27 OVA titles. This upcoming live-action film will be the first of its kind, with a global theatrical release scheduled. Legendary Pictures, known for the Pacific Rim series, will handle production, while Jim Mickle, director and writer of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, will direct and write the screenplay.
Additionally, Bandai Namco Filmworks America, LLC will be established on April 1, 2025, to oversee the production of GUNDAM (working title). The new North American subsidiary will be fully owned by Bandai Namco Holdings USA Inc., the regional headquarters for Bandai Namco Group in North America. Under the control of Bandai Namco Filmworks, it will expand licensing operations in the region and work toward increasing the brand value of the Mobile Suit Gundam series.
