Nariaki Obukuro is set to release his highly anticipated fourth album, Zatto, on January 15, 2024, through digital platforms, followed by a CD release on February 26. This marks his first album in over three years, following the 2021 release of Strides. Zatto also represents a significant milestone in Obukuro’s career, as it is his first self-released project, reflecting a culmination of creative influences inspired by his life in London.
The album features eight tracks that blend a variety of global music genres, including jazz, reggae, dub, and Latin, while celebrating the beauty of the Japanese language. For this project, Obukuro worked with a number of prominent musicians from the London music scene, including Rosetta Carr, the bassist for Sampha’s support band, Ayo Salawu, the drummer of Kokoroko, and Lyle Barton, a pianist who has worked with Nala Sinephro. The album’s mixing was handled by the Grammy-winning engineer Russell Elevado, renowned for his work on D’Angelo’s Voodoo and Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun.
Accompanying the release, Obukuro has shared his thoughts and reflections on the album, offering fans deeper insight into the creative journey behind Zatto.
I spent time creating these songs through sessions with jazz musicians in London. It’s hard to believe, but this album marks 1,190 days since Strides—nearly three and a half years. In that time, a high schooler could have entered and graduated. It’s been a long journey. But I believe songs can only come to life through experience. The time and effort I’ve invested in this album have transformed it into something truly timeless, a work that will endure for future generations. Honestly, if it gets recognition while I’m still around, I’ll consider myself lucky.
In addition, a nationwide tour with a band to promote the album has been confirmed. From March to April, the tour will kick off at Osaka’s Misono Universe, with stops in Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Tokyo across five cities.
