The highly anticipated film The Substance (original title) will be released in Japan on Friday, May 16. Directed and written by Coralie Fargeat, the film features a standout performance by Demi Moore in the lead role.
The film has already garnered significant recognition on the international awards circuit. On December 9, it was announced that The Substance had received five nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards in the Musical/Comedy category. The nominations include Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress (Demi Moore), and Best Supporting Actress (Margaret Qualley). The film also took home the Best Screenplay Award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects Awards at the 37th European Film Awards.
The plot centers on Elizabeth, a former top actress in her 50s, who faces a decline in her looks and a corresponding reduction in work opportunities. In a desperate bid to regain her former self, she turns to a controversial new form of regenerative medicine. In the North American and European markets, where the film has already premiered, Moore’s portrayal of a woman consumed by a dangerous obsession with beauty and youth has drawn widespread attention. Margaret Qualley, who plays Sue—a young woman who directly challenges Elizabeth—has also been praised for her performance.
Along with the announcement of the Japanese release, four new stills from the film were unveiled, including a striking image of Sue stretching in front of a massive portrait of Elizabeth, and another of Elizabeth in the shadows, her face etched with melancholy, presenting a stark contrast to Sue’s youthful energy.
