The Japanese release date for ‘Wicked’ has been set for March 7, 2025, and the main trailer has been unveiled.
‘Wicked’ is a musical that tells the untold story of the friendship between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, set before the events of The Wizard of Oz. In the film directed by Jon M. Chu, Cynthia Erivo, known for her performances in The Color Purple and multiple award wins including Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards, will play Elphaba. Grammy-winning artist Ariana Grande will portray Glinda. The movie also boasts a stellar cast, including Michelle Yeoh as the formidable Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Shiz University, and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The trailer begins with the line, “To all of Oz, the Wicked Witch is dead!” and features the iconic song Defying Gravity, showcasing moments from Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship. Glinda supports Elphaba with gentle words, “You can do anything,” while Elphaba, with a determined expression, asserts, “They should be afraid of me.” The trailer hints at the epic narrative with the line, “To unite people, create a common enemy,” followed by scenes of the two facing challenges, foreshadowing an extraordinary story.
Starting from December 6 (Friday), advance movie tickets with special bonuses will be available for purchase both in-store and online. The physical cards will feature special sticky notes (two random types) adorned with the silhouettes of Elphaba and Glinda. Online purchases will come with a “Digital Invitation to Emerald City.” This digital invitation includes a gift of an original wallpaper, eligibility for a campaign with prize giveaways, and access to exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. Additionally, for those who purchase two or more tickets, an early-bird discount code for 200 yen off will be distributed.
