The art event ‘SENSE ISLAND/LAND | Island of Sensation and Land of Sensation 2024’ will take place from October 26 (Saturday) to December 15 (Sunday) on the uninhabited island of Sarushima and in the urban areas of Yokosuka, Kanagawa.
This event is a revamped edition of the nighttime art festival ‘SENSE ISLAND,’ which started on Sarushima in 2019. It expands into the city of Yokosuka, allowing visitors to enjoy art during the day for the first time in two years. The theme for the 2024 event is “Sensation/Layers/Art set against the backdrop of Yokosuka’s city and uninhabited Sarushima,” focusing on the “layers” of Yokosuka, where various histories, cultures, and industries intersect. In addition to art exhibitions and performances on Sarushima, various programs utilizing historical sites and urban areas will visualize and contextualize time and land through art.
The event is once again produced by Seiichi Saito of Panoramatics, with guest curator Akira Aoki from the non-profit organization Gei to. It will feature exhibitions by 14 domestic and international artists and performances by five performance artists. Participating artists include ARu (Kosuke Matsushima, Ryoji Yukino, Masashi Fujimoto), Yui Usui, Hiroko Kikuchi, Kyunchome, Seiichi Saito, SIDE CORE, Takuro Tamayama, Choi Jeong-hwa, TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH (Kan Hamamoto, Rina Maeda, Mari Matsubara, Hana Yamamoto), Hiroshi Nakamura, Haruna Mitobe, Soichiro Mihara, Taichi Yakuouji, and Aiko Yamamoto.
Performance artists include asamicro, Kinosuke Umegawa, Oruta, Saho Terao, and Keiichi Haino & Shuta Hasunuma. Asamicro will perform on Sarushima on November 16 (Saturday), Umegawa on November 17 (Sunday), and Haino & Hasunuma on November 23 (Saturday, holiday). Saho Terao will perform at the Yokosuka Museum of Art on October 27 (Sunday), while Oruta will perform at Uraga Dock on December 14 (Saturday) and 15 (Sunday). Additionally, screenings and workshops are planned throughout the event.
Tickets for the Sarushima venue, which operates only on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays during the evening, are paid and must be purchased in advance online. Admission to the urban venues in Yokosuka is free for viewing artworks, but participation in events will incur a fee, with ticket reservations available for each event as it approaches.
