YAJICO GIRL Interview: How an Introvert Found Rhythm in Dance Music

Will YAJICO GIRL continue to evolve?

“EUPHORIA” ends with the track “2024,” which is a sequel to “2019” from the album Indoor, released five years ago. So, do you think YAJICO GIRL will still be making dance music five years from now, in 2029?

Shikata: I’m not sure… but I think there’s a possibility we might still be doing it.

Chasing trends and changing over time could be considered a kind of signature for YAJICO GIRL, but perhaps the current dance music direction might become a core part of the band’s identity moving forward. Of course, this is just a prediction, but how do you feel about it at this stage?

Shikata: I think constantly changing could be tough. Not everyone in the band is someone who loves trends like I do, so I’ve always wanted to create something where we can say, “This is the kind of music that feels like YAJICO GIRL.” So, I think if we’re still doing dance music five years from now, that would be closer to the ideal I have now.

As the band’s musical style evolves, it can be challenging to move forward while making sure all members are on the same page. Additionally, some fans may feel alienated or think that the band has “changed” when the music shifts. Do you experience any struggle with that?

Shikata: Well, we’ve evolved in the past, and there are still people who’ve stuck with us, so I believe that if people trust us, they’ll keep supporting whatever music we make. So, I don’t really have that fear. But personally, I do want us to have a clear identity. I want people to think, “This is YAJICO GIRL’s sound,” or “This is our signature.” I’d love to emphasize that uniqueness more.

Changing while staying true to your core isn’t easy, but your distinct voice in the lyrics has always remained, and that helps build trust with your audience. It would be great if, in five years, your music also has a stronger signature.

Shikata: Regardless of the direction we take musically, I think we can refine certain elements like, “This chord progression is very YAJICO,” or “The way we use sound feels like YAJICO.” Since I don’t usually play instruments when creating songs, I’m not quite as familiar with those technical aspects at the moment, but if we can focus more on instrumental, tonal, and structural aspects, I think we could create a sound that truly embodies “this is YAJICO GIRL.”
