Yuta Orisaka Quietly Revitalizes “Jumon”: If He Were to Wish for Something in This World

Navigating Coexistence: Wishing Amidst Incompatible Lives

-Once explained, its potency becomes evident, but “Jumon” (Incantation) carries a profound strength, don’t you think? It likely evokes an eerie impression for many.

Orisaka: Yes, that’s right. In a book on chiropractic I used to read, it said, “While doing this exercise, try reciting this sequence of words in your head.” It wasn’t about the power of the words themselves but rather the relaxation of the physical pronunciation.

For instance, it mentioned that having many voiced consonants can make your mouth movements feel stiff. Conversely, reciting this sequence gradually relaxes them. It described the existence of such words. Thinking about it that way, I thought, “Singing is like exercise.” It’s akin to taking deep breaths. So, I thought it would be okay to create songs in that manner.

Orisaka: And also, this is something I read in a book before, but humans have two different circuits for understanding: one through physical experience and another through written words. It’s because of this that humanity has prospered so much, I think. Originally, animals could only communicate with those they could see face-to-face, but through written words, someone’s thoughts can be conveyed to many people. That’s how civilization spread.

I believe it has its pros and cons, but I also think it’s an important function inherent in humans. However, things that come from sensory experience or intuition can also be dangerous. Intuitive feelings like “I hate that person” or “They would be better off gone” can lead to war, for example.

Children growing up in environments where such intuitive reactions are responded to might internalize the idea that there are people in the world who think, “It would be better if they were gone.” As they grow into adults, this idea becomes ingrained in them. I want to protest against this cycle. I think there’s a clear intention behind that. For this reason, slogans or similar words are necessary, and I believe both written words and intuition are essential.

-While intuition holds significance, it can also be fragile. Intuitive perceptions such as finding foreigners intimidating can sometimes lead to associations with racism.

Orisaka: That’s right. That’s why I think the balance between intuition and written culture is crucial. I feel like the word “Jumon” (Incantation) can move between these two realms. That’s why I chose this title.

-I’m starting to understand why a healthy breeze flows through this album.

Orisaka: The spark for finding my voice actually came from news about war. “Opposed to war” isn’t an ideology; I see it more as a mantra to repeat.

There’s a fear to express it within the societal context, which I find daunting. In reality, there are people who simply can’t reconcile, and finding ways to coexist is an ongoing process, isn’t it?

So, it’s not about wanting to live alongside you. It’s more like, “I appreciate the world you inhabit.” I wish for a world where we can express at least that much.
