An Album Like a First Season That Didn’t End Neatly
The feeling of embracing and affirming the very act of existence was something I strongly felt from this album. Looking into the details, the first and second tracks of the album contain motifs from the 1970s soul group The Presidents’ song “5-10-15-20 (25-30 Years of Love).” What do you think this song symbolizes?
Suzuki: The Presidents’ song has that unmistakable, overwhelmingly happy vibe that’s characteristic of soul music from that era. But more than anything, I wanted to bring out the reality that didn’t turn out like that song. Like, “Things didn’t unfold as perfectly as those idealistic lyrics suggested, did they?”
In the latter half of the album, there are two tracks titled “platform” and “smoking room,” both referencing physical spaces, yet the human relationships depicted in them feel completely different.
Suzuki: For example, the significance of a room where you happen to be with someone you feel a deep connection with is entirely different from a room where you’re surrounded by people who have nothing to do with you. Having “platform” and “smoking room” placed side by side feels like it naturally reflects that reality. Looking back now, I think that’s how it turned out. But honestly, when I was writing them, I was just doing my best to get through it… [laughs].
-[laughs].
Suzuki: There’s a limit to how much you can consciously control things [laughs]. But I think a great piece of work is one where even unintended elements come to life, so in some ways, it’s important not to over-engineer everything.

Has the latter half of the album already been created?
Suzuki: No, it’s still yet to come.
How do you interpret the fact that this first part of the album concludes with “on the beach”?
Suzuki: In “on the beach”, I intended to include words that suggest something beyond this point. Maybe I wanted to say, “Looking back on memories and just saying ‘That was beautiful,’ isn’t where it ends, right?”
What do you think, Inoue?
Inoue: (Reading the lyrics of “on the beach”) …Yeah, this really doesn’t feel like an ending at all. I think all human relationships come down to pairs of people, but in this album, even though it’s supposed to be talking about the same two people, it sometimes feels like it’s discussing entirely different relationships. That realism really stands out. And at the very end of such an album, “on the beach” introduces this sense of hesitation—that feels real too. In deep relationships, hesitation always exists. There’s no way people who’ve been together for years wouldn’t experience it.
How about you, Isomoto?
Isomoto: “on the beach” feels like a song where various memories and emotions blend together. And rather than those emotions hitting you as separate things, they seep into one another. The way those colors bleed into each other—they reflect the feelings in each song leading up to this point.
Suzuki: That makes sense. I see what you mean.
Isomoto: These blurred memories and emotions don’t reach a conclusion; they just fade out. That makes you wonder, “What happens to all this in the second half?” So in a way, it’s like the end of a first season that doesn’t wrap things up neatly.
Inoue: I get it. A good drama never has a neatly wrapped-up first season.
Isomoto: Ending with this song makes it unclear whether it’s a happy ending or not. In long narratives, you rarely get a simple, definitive conclusion.
Inoue: That makes sense. I like that there can be so many interpretations.
