Evolving Shapes of Expanding Images

-What is the meaning behind the title “500mm”?

Kitamura: When I decided to create a dance music concept, I initially wanted to make a simple composition with little development that could be played by a DJ, but it ended up being something different. It ended up being different. What I have done so far as a singer-songwriter came out. So the word “radius” became a key word because of the contrast between what I envisioned and what came out of me. I thought I could put various contrasts into this word, such as ideal and reality, success and failure, hope and anxiety. I thought that by making the radius larger, I would be able to make myself a larger vessel. I chose “500mm” because I thought it would be visually pretty to go from m2 to m1, since a radius of 500mm means a diameter of 1m.

Kitamura: The jacket was also close to the image I had in mind. It is the image of the sun coming out of the sea that first came to mind.

-The image of the sun rising from the sea that you mentioned midway through could also resonate with the image of a sunset you mentioned, symbolizing both beginnings and endings. It seems to fit perfectly with the timing of your first EP release, marking a full-fledged start as a musician. The title of the release live is ‘1m,’ and on that day, you’ll be performing live solo, correct?”

Kitamura: That’s right. I would like to try playing with a band or other people, but first of all, I would like to make something that I can complete by myself. Fred Agean and others are doing live shows by themselves, so I wanted to try it too. I have done an acoustic set, a techno set, an electronic set, and an ambient set once before, and for the release concert, I want to show everything I have accumulated over the past year in one day.

-How do you envision your future as a musician?

Kitamura: There are so many things I want to do. I want to make an album with jazz as a high priority while incorporating elements of storytelling, I want to try a piano trio, I want to write ensemble pieces, and I want to continue DJing. I would like to increase the number of instruments I can play, and I would like to improve my guitar, bass, and flute skills. I would also like to make animations.

-Animation?

Kitamura: I really like Shishiyamazaki-san, who makes animations using the rotoscope method. For the artwork for “500mm,” I used Blender, which is a software program for creating 3DCG images, and I recently learned that it can be used to create animation, so I would like to try it.

-The image within Mr. Kitamura expands into various forms of music, sometimes transforming into animation. Reflecting on your journey up until today has made me very excited about how your career will continue to unfold.

Kitamura: I still don’t know what I will become [laughs], but I want to keep doing what interests me.
