Beyond Labels: Empowering Individuals to Define Themselves
– You brought up the idea that “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” is a film centered around heroes. What characteristics do you believe are essential for someone to be considered a hero?
Amiripour: I believe that a true hero is someone who understands that the strongest and worst enemy is not outside, but is himself. Of course, problems and bad people are ubiquitous in this world, but I also believe that a hero is someone who inspires us. They are the ones who go for something without fearing the consequences.
Humans are good at finding faults in others, but it is difficult for us to find our own faults. If everyone could do that, I think the world would be a much better place.
– Numerous characters in this movie face disempowerment or societal marginalization in various ways. Is there a particular inclination to portray individuals on the fringes of society?
Amiripour: Definitely. I think being an outsider is about being an individual. You do not need a group, organization or attribute to define yourself. By nature, a person should be able to define himself regardless of such groups. I think it is not good to worry about how others see you in a group. Group mentality is also bad. That is why I want to depict outsiders.
