Celeina: Mr. Sato, your latest work will be released tomorrow (July 21). It is a mystery work titled “Zanzan”.

Sato: This is a detective story with the main character Sakurako Narumi, and it is the third in the series. The main character was originally hired by the police as a musician, and after a year or two of experience in the field, she was supposed to be assigned to the music band, but she has great investigative skills, so she stays in the criminal division and is involved in the investigation of cases.
The synopsis says, “A member of a popular rock band was murdered by someone,” but in my opinion, it was a ska-punk band (laughs). A member of the horn section of the band was killed, and the suspect used to play in a brass band and was apparently from the same high school brass band.
Takano: I have a feeling that your experience in music is also a part of the story.
Sato: Yes, that’s right. This series is based on a classical music motif, so it is difficult for me to use my experience, but this time, the person who was killed is active in the field of rock music, so I think I was able to reflect that in the story.
Takano: How do you come up with ideas for the characters and the story?
Sato: I don’t know. I think it’s a combination of things. I think it would be interesting if there was a detective like that, or there isn’t a detective like that, and I just keep coming up with ideas.
Celeina: When you write a detective story like this, do you need to have a certain level of knowledge?
Sato: I don’t know either (laughs). (laughs) Police novels have a rather fixed format. The main characters are usually from the Investigation Section 1, so there is a certain organizational structure and structure. So if you learn about the organizational structure in the first novel, you don’t have to relearn it in the second and third novels.

Sato: I believe that novels are meant to depict human beings, so I think that the characters are very important. In the third novel of the series, the main character, Sakurako Narumi, a detective with an absolute sense of pitch, and her buddy, Otochita, have developed a bond or bond, and I think they have become more familiar to me, so I hope that readers will enjoy their interactions.
