Special Exhibition: The Legend of Sesshu—The Birth of a Charismatic Artist” is set to take place at the Kyoto National Museum in Higashiyama, Kyoto, from April 13 to May 26, 2024.
Sesshu, a prominent figure in Japanese art during the Muromachi period (1336-1573), known as the “Sage of Painting,” boasts six national treasures, the most by any painter. This exhibition explores Sesshu’s reception, particularly in the early modern period, featuring works by various artists like Unya Togao, Hasegawa Tohaku, Kano Tanyu, and Ito Jakuchu. It delves into the evolution of his legacy. All six of Sesshu’s national treasures will be on display, offering a profound glimpse into his enduring influence.
The exhibition will be divided into two periods: the first half, from April 13 to May 6, and the second half, from May 8 to May 26. Certain works will be exhibited throughout the entire period.
