Overcoming the Idea of “How Things Should Be”
“Living true to one’s passions and beliefs seems like the essence of ‘rock ‘n’ roll.’ Yet, ‘THE FAKE ESCAPE’ was inspired by embracing the contradictions of the world that you encountered in the UK. Accepting these contradictions, in a sense, aligns more with the practical mindset of a ‘worldly adult,’ which contrasts with the rebellious nature of rock ‘n’ roll. How do these two seemingly conflicting ideas coexist within you?”
Hashimoto: I think what I really want is to stay true to myself. It’s not about acting freely without a care, but as a human, there are times when my words or actions may not quite align. Yet, we’re not designed to live perfectly consistent lives, and not every loose end needs resolution. To navigate a world full of contradictions, I believe we need a solid belief to stand on. Helsinki has songs that embrace being authentic, but there are also times when strength is required. It’s these delicate, in-between moments that I want to capture in my music.

Helsinki’s music embraces both psychedelic and pop sounds, reflecting the contradictions inherent in human nature. Do you ever feel the urge to push back against the demand for simplicity or accessibility?
Hashimoto: Absolutely, I want to push back against it. While there’s a part of me that wants success and security, I don’t think I could ever trade my soul for simplicity, especially since I haven’t reached that point yet. As I look ahead to my future and career, that’s something I’m not willing to compromise. I hope that, in continuing to take risks, my journey can offer some relief to others who might feel confined by the idea of how things “should” be.
