Music and Film in Harmony

And it is impossible to discuss this film without mentioning the presence of music. Not only does Hanbura Hanbura’s ‘My Sunshine,’ which serves as both the theme song and the film’s title, play a significant role, but also Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” which makes a striking appearance in the film, as well as The Zombies’ “Going Out of My Head,” which plays during the scene where Takuya and Sakura, practicing on a frozen lake, begin to fool around and dance with Arakawa. Additionally, the entire score by Yoshinari Sato of Hanbura Hanbura gently accompanies the characters.
For example, during a break, when Takuya, Sakura, and Arakawa are eating cup noodles and stepping in time with the music playing in the film. Or on the day Takuya successfully completes his first spin, his joyful skating while chasing Arakawa on the ice resurfacing vehicle seems like a dance of delight. The softness of the music, mixed with humming, envelops him. “Going Out of My Head,” which plays while they frolic on the frozen lake, was actually a song heard in Arakawa’s car during their travel, and it doesn’t reach their location from outside. It is simply a “movie magic.” Much like a musical, the music that should originally be outside the story instead makes those within it dance.

‘My Sunshine’ is a film that moves slowly and steadily, in step with a boy who struggles to put his thoughts into words. It walks alongside him, endlessly, step by step. It sings along with him, hums along with him, and dances with him. That’s what this film is about.
