The upcycled brand “momiji” was born from the challenges of working in the fields.
-What was the background of the upcycling project “momiji” that was born out of the challenges of working in the fields?
Matsuyama: When we work in the fields, we sometimes catch deer or wild boars, and the locals eat the meat together or sell it wholesale to restaurants, but we don’t use the skin. I thought it was a waste, so I started making various products after talking to people in the know and doing research.

Matsuyama: The more I researched, the more I found out things I did not know. Deer and wild boars are harvested at a rate of about 600,000 tons per year, and I had no idea about that. I think that you can’t see these things unless you face them properly. I started momiji with the idea of expressing these things as well, and at first I made jackets and other accessories out of animal skins.
You also made the T-shirt you are wearing today, didn’t you?
Matsuyama: Yes: Yes, it is. At first, we made leather goods, but what is thrown away as garbage nowadays is not only skins. That is why the T-shirts for this project are made from recycled materials. This time, while using recycled materials, we are working together with artists from all over Japan.

-It seems that momiji is not a side business for you, but a “place” where you can practice and experience your interests and concerns with a variety of people. Do you plan to continue living in two locations?
Matsuyama: I would like to think about that as my child grows up. Basically, I have learned over the past few years that I can work wherever I am. I think we should talk about it as a family and decide at the appropriate time.
-What do you think your future as an actor will be like?
Matsuyama: I hope to become an actor like Akira Emoto, an actor who can be successful when that person is present. That is why I would like to live my life in such a way that I can give back to my acting career what I have gained from it.
