Exploring “Art Week Tokyo”: Aoi Yamada Highlights Art and Unexplored Experiences Beyond Imagination
Today, the exhibition at KOSAKU KANECHIKA, along with 53 of Tokyo’s leading museums and galleries, will participate in “Art Week Tokyo (AWT).”
AoiYamada: There are so many participants! I’m looking forward to it.

AoiYamada: Today, Junko Oki, whose exhibition I saw at KOSAKU KANECHIKA, will be exhibiting at “AWT FOCUS: Earth, Wind, Fire, and the Future Imagined from Asia” (venue: Okura Shukokan, 1st and 2nd floors). I’m curious to see what kind of works will be on display there.
Tabaimo “Sonoato” Venue: Gallery Koyanagi

Tabaimo, known for her video installations that depict the unsettling undercurrents of human psychology and society, creates eerie landscapes that have garnered high acclaim both in Japan and abroad. Her work includes the Japanese Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 and the 61st Newcomer’s Award in Fine Arts the same year. She now collaborates on an artist cocktail at AWT BAR.
Exhibition period: Saturday, October 5, 2024 – Saturday, November 16, 2024
Address: Koyanagi Building 9F, 1-7-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
URL: https://www.gallerykoyanagi.com/
At the AWT BAR for Art Week Tokyo, Tabaimo has crafted a sweet, milk-based cocktail expressing the “fear” evoked by the color white. A limited number of coasters designed by Tabaimo to pair with the cocktail will also be available.

Aoi Yamada: I’m also drawn to the somewhat underground atmosphere of Tabaimo’s solo exhibition “After That” at Gallery Koyanagi. Since I’ve been influenced by the club, art, and music scenes of the 1990s and by underground culture, I enjoy fluid works where various elements are mixed together. I really like the color palette and surreal world of Tabaimo’s video installations that weave eerie landscapes. I’d love to see it.
During the exhibition period, it seems you can also enjoy a collaboration cocktail with Tabaimo at AWT BAR in Omotesando.
Aoi Yamada: I’m curious about the pure white artist cocktail Tabaimo collaborated on… At first glance, it’s so white that it’s hard to imagine its taste, and I’m excited about this unknown experience, like “drinking art.”
Shiori Watanabe, Syuku / Lodging Venue: Shiseido Gallery

Shiori Watanabe creates works that hint at the challenges humans face with one another by focusing on motifs that evoke conflicts between humans and nature, such as invasive and endangered species. In this exhibition, she presents her well-known piece Sans Room, in which aquariums and planters are connected by hoses to circulate water and bacteria, creating a self-sustained ecosystem. Also on display is a new video installation inspired by the Noh play Okina.
Exhibition period: Wednesday, November 6, 2024 – Thursday, December 26, 2024
Address: B1F Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building, 8-8-3 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
URL: https://gallery.shiseido.com/jp/
Aoi Yamada: I’m intrigued by Shiori Watanabe’s works that utilize aquariums filled with plants, fish, and bacteria. The combination of artificial and natural or organic elements creates a lot of unpredictable gaps, which is exciting for the artist as well.
Michiko Kon 2024 Venue: PGI

Michiko Kon expresses the unreal realities that exist within her imagination through visual art, specifically photography. She began her artistic career in 1970, creating objects using materials such as vegetables, fish, flowers, and insects, and is known for photographing these creations and printing them on photographic paper. In this solo exhibition, she plans to present around 20 new works.
Exhibition period: Wednesday, October 23, 2024 – Saturday, December 7, 2024
Address: 3F TKB Building, 2-3-4 Higashi-Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo
URL: https://www.pgi.ac/exhibitions/10142
Aoi Yamada: I would be keen to explore the unreal realities present within Masamichi Yamamoto’s imagination. When I seek new perspectives or invigorating changes in my approach to the reality I experience daily, or when I desire a jolt of inspiration, I believe that art offers myriad possibilities for how we live.
At present, my expressive endeavors are primarily focused on acting and dance; however, I aspire to return to painting and eventually create my own spatial installations. With this in mind, I look forward to immersing myself in a diverse array of artworks during Art Week Tokyo to gather ample inspiration.
