The “Miró Exhibition” will be held at the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno from March 1 (Saturday) to July 6 (Sunday).
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Spanish-born painter Joan Miró. Known for his distinctive style, in works like the “Constellations” series, where he transforms natural shapes like stars, the moon, and the sun into symbolic icons, Miró enjoys widespread popularity in Japan. The exhibition offers a major retrospective showcasing the essence of Miró’s art, allowing visitors to experience the genius of one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. Following successful retrospectives in cities such as London, Paris, and New York, this exhibition revisits Miró’s life and his global reappraisal.
The exhibition will feature three works from the “Constellations” series, scattered across the world, on display together for the first time. Additionally, it will showcase masterpieces from various stages of his career, including “The House with Palm Trees” (1918), “Dutch Interior I” (1928), and his later work, “Burnt Canvas II,” where gasoline was soaked into the canvas and set alight, offering a comprehensive overview of his most iconic pieces.

One of the world’s top football clubs, FC Barcelona, is also contributing to the exhibition by lending a poster created by Miró for the club’s 75th anniversary in 1974. The exhibition will comprehensively showcase Miró’s art, highlighting his continuous exploration of new expressions, which he pursued until the age of 90.
