The men’s skirt brand “lesskirt” has launched, with pre-orders starting on August 1 (Thursday) through their online store on BASE.
“lesskirt” challenges conventional beliefs about skirts with its brand concept, “What’s wrong with men wearing skirts?”
Why did men stop wearing skirts, and when did this change occur? Why must clothing choices be dictated by appearance? Why?
I have a daughter who was in middle school and came to me with a question.
“I don’t want to wear a skirt.”
There’s a tradition in schools where it’s considered “normal” for girls to wear skirts. For us, it’s become so standard that we’ve lost the emotional connection to the question of why skirts are mandatory or why someone might not want to wear one.
At her school, there were also trousers available for girls, and she found other classmates who felt the same way. Now, it’s “normal” for her to attend school in trousers. This got me thinking.
What about the opposite? Why is there a culture that says boys can’t wear skirts? It just became that way. Of course, some men embrace skirts as a personal choice as adults, but it still feels different.
My own questioning of “why?” led to this release. Why can’t men, even if they are rugged or traditional, wear skirts? If adult men can wear skirts casually, perhaps younger generations will eventually shed these fixed notions.
Development: Reona Komuta, General Manager of the Live Music Club Division, Rinky Dink Inc.
“lesskirt” is a new venture by Linky Dink, a company involved in music business activities such as operating studios and live houses in the metropolitan area. The initial lineup features skirts available in three colors that can be styled for street, outdoor, and mode fashion scenes. Designed for everyday wear similar to chinos, the skirts focus on comfort and silhouette. They are made from TC twill fabric (a polyester/cotton blend), commonly used in work pants, and feature a 6 cm wide elastic waistband. The free waist adjustment with a drawstring ensures a comfortable fit. Functional elements include a key hook, and the design maintains the silhouette’s structure from the waist to the hem, keeping the skirt’s flare. The length is designed with an 8/9 length in mind, making it compatible with sneakers and boots.
With the start of pre-orders, a concept video capturing the world of “lesskirt” has also been released. The video features men from various professions and age groups—such as a craft beer bar employee, a record store manager, a traditional izakaya owner, and a skater racing through the streets—each confidently wearing skirts in their unique styles. The recurring question “Why?” voiced by the characters in the video embodies the brand’s concept of “What’s wrong with men wearing skirts?”
The brand logo, designed by Takeshi Gomi—known for his work as the frontman of the rock band LOSTAGE and for his illustrations on X (formerly Twitter)—reflects a genderless world with its unique touch and playful character. This logo, adding a pop element with its charming design, is also sewn as a patch on the skirts’ pockets.
In the future, the brand plans to release skirts in colors and patterns beyond the basic options. Collaborations with artists and creators are also planned, with the latest updates being shared regularly on the brand’s official social media channels.
