A documentary film titled “Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement,” which traces the life of Gary Young, the original drummer of the alternative rock band Pavement, will be released at Theater Image Forum in Shibuya, Tokyo, starting from Saturday, June 15th.
Pavement gained popularity in the 1990s for its rough-hewn, catchy lo-fi sound, and even after disbanding in 1999, the group has continued to perform energetically, reuniting for live tours, etc. In this film, Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kamberg, the core members of Pavement, record and perform a live performance of “Louder Than You Think” at the studio “Louder Than You Think”. studio “Louder Than You Think,” and the film depicts the early days of the band as they met Garry and gained fans through the release of their first album, “Slanted and Enchanted.
Garry Young created many legendary stage performances with his unpredictable behavior, such as giving away vegetables to fans before a show and standing on his head during a song he was not supposed to perform. The film shows the life of Garry Young, a member of the hippie generation who was one year older than the other members of the band and sometimes annoyed those around him, through live footage from the 1990s and interviews with him and the other band members.
The film won the Audience Award in the “24 Beats Per Second” music film category at SXSW FILM & TV FESTIVAL 2023. This will be the first theatrical release of the film in Japan.
