To celebrate the 20th anniversary of ‘Congratulations! Mobile Meeting 2! Tamagotchi Plus’, a revival edition called ‘Tamagotchi Connection’ will be released worldwide.
The “Congratulations! Mobile Meeting 2! Tamagotchi Plus,” also known as “Keitama,” was released in 2004 and gained popularity among elementary school students as an innovative toy capable of infrared communication at the time. It featured functions allowing communication with “large tamagotchis” placed in various locations such as toy stores and shopping malls, where players could obtain local specialties, travel tickets, and luxury items within the game. Carrying tamagotchis with straps attached to mobile phones became a trend, leading to shortages and becoming a social phenomenon.
In the “Tamagotchi Connection,” like its predecessor “Keitama,” players can enjoy nurturing gameplay. By playing games with the tamagotchi, feeding it, and taking care of it when it’s sick, players can raise various characters depending on how they nurture it, which is the charm of the game. Additionally, players can earn “Gotchi Points” through games and collect over 150 items.
The infrared communication function, which contributed to the boom, allows for three types of play: “game,” “present,” and “visit.” Through repeated communication, tamagotchis can become friends and even become partners. Once they become partners, a new generation of tamagotchis is born.
For this revival, the designs have been arranged based on four popular colors from the past: “water blue,” “pink,” “flower,” and “melon soda.” Additionally, a ball chain has been added for easier portability. Fans in their 20s and 30s who played with them at the time, as well as teenagers enjoying Y2K fashion and the popular tamagotchis overseas, are excited about this release. It will be available in Japan from August 3rd (Saturday) and in Europe and the United States from July 9th (Tuesday) in advance.
A design voting project is currently underway for the second “Tamagotchi Connection” to be released in the fall of 2024. The voting period ends on Friday, May 31. In addition, a pop-up store “Minna Shu~go! Tamagotchi no Omise” pop-up store is scheduled to open in Tokyo on Thursday, July 25. Details will be announced later.
