In 2005, he was hailed as an “astonishing dancer” by The New York Times for his solo dance piece KATANA. He was invited to the Venice Biennale in 2007. He received the 2013 Arts Selection New Artist Award for Mandala no Uchū (The Universe of Mandala). That same year, he served as a Cultural Ambassador for the Agency for Cultural Affairs. His major choreography and direction credits include “Ryugu” for the New National Theatre Ballet, “The Little Prince” for KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theatre, and the nationally co-produced opera “La Bohème,” among many others. He has undertaken numerous experimental projects, including collaborations with traditional performing arts like Noh and gagaku, and video production during residencies at welfare facilities for the “TURN” project. He has appeared as the main performer in the dance documentary “GIGAKU! Dance Silk Road” (NHK BS), played the role of No-Face in the stage production of “Spirited Away,” and appeared in films. He is one of the leading artists in the contemporary dance scene, freely crossing genres as both a dancer and a director. He was the Chief Choreographer for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony.
