#maya ongaku
Formed in 2021 in a seaside village near Enoshima, maya ongaku is a three-piece band made up of Tsutomu Sonoda, Ryota Takano, and Shoei Ikeda. They’re part of a vibrant community of local musicians creating earthy psychedelia that transcends the roots of the soul. The name “maya ongaku” isn’t drawn from ancient civilizations, but is a newly coined term that describes imaginary landscapes just beyond the edge of perception. Their starting point is what they call “spontaneous generation” — the idea of life emerging from non-life.
In May 2023, they released their debut album, Approach to Anima, through Guruguru Brain and Bayon Production. After a successful EU/UK tour in November and a domestic tour in December, they returned in August 2024 with their new EP, Electronic Phantoms. That same month, they hosted rhythm echo noise, a collaborative event with WWW, inviting Dutch artist Felbm to perform. maya ongaku was also honored with the “Best Breakthrough Artists” award at the inaugural TOKYO ALTER MUSIC AWARD 2024, a new global music award launched from Tokyo. They’ve played at major festivals across Japan — including Mori, Michi, Ichiba, FFKT, FUJI ROCK, Asagiri JAM, and FUJI & SUN — as well as at festivals in Korea and China, continuing to grow their presence across Asia and beyond.
