Born in 1970 in Fenyang, Shanxi Province, China, he entered the Literature Department of Beijing Film Academy in 1993. His first feature film, “A Momentary Dream,” had its world premiere in the Forum section of the 1998 Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Wolfgang Staute Award for Best New Director, as well as the Grand Prix at the Pusan International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, and Festival of the 3 Continents in Nantes, attracting great international attention. In 2006, he won the Golden Lion (Grand Prix) at the Venice International Film Festival for “Yangtze River Lamentations,” set in the ancient city of Fongje, which is under water due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam; in 2013, he won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes International Film Festival for “The Touch of Sin;” in 2003, he won the Golden Carriage Award sponsored by the French Directors Association at the Cannes International Film Festival. In 2005, he founded the Pingyao International Film Festival, and is currently the president of the Chinese Film Directors Association. He is currently the president of the Chinese Film Directors Association. He is one of the most prominent film directors in China today, both in name and reality.
